Race for
the Cure
THE SUSAN G. KOMEN Race for the Cure is
coming back to Eugene.
The third annual local version of the worldwide
event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 21. The race
series is one of the largest and most successful
education and fundraising events for breast cancer.
More than 7,000 runners, walkers and volunteers
of all ages and fitness levels participated in last
year’s race in Eugene, including more than 300 from
PeaceHealth, presenting sponsor of the event.
Three-quarters of the money raised by the event
will go to local organizations for grants, screenings
and education about breast cancer and breast health.
The remaining funds go to breast cancer research.
The breast cancer rate in the Pacific Northwest
is among the highest in the nation. Each week,
61 women in Oregon and southwest Washington
are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 11 will die.
Late-stage breast cancer diagnoses in Lane County
exceed the state average.
